Health insurance distorts the market more than having it be given as compensation distorts the market.

It does for the medical marketplace, but again we're talking about reforming the 'payment system' not US medicine.

Even the relatively limited free market aspects still have a benefit compared to a totally socialized solution.


Not much. If you are talking about the whole pie of the insured and uninsured, you are probably talking about less than 15% who actually write a regular check to insurance companies for health insurance. Not enough to drive increased consumer benefits and cost reduction. If it was 90% you would certainly see a lot more innovation. No, this system is convoluted and dysfunctional.

If you have a universal, basic single payer system with catastrophic coverage, then you can move on to a free market with 'add-on' policies. Maybe with the basic you have to wait six months for a hip replacement, maybe you don't get a private room, maybe you have a higher co-pay. Maybe you don't get to go to the Cleveland Clinic if you get cancer. But you are not out on a limb or bankrupt if something goes wrong. And, the liability goes down for the insurance companies selling the 'silver' and 'gold' plated add-on policies in a free marketplace.

Does that sound so terrible?
