I'm not sure how old he is. He's had multiple owners in the past. The last one said he was probably a certain age but then the vet thought he was younger than that. He might be about 14 or 15 now, so he is an old cat, but he was pretty healthy until recently.

The cats owner knows people who are undergoing dialysis so she asked if it was possible for Winston, but was basically told it was impractical by the vet.

I've read about dialysis and even experimental kidney transplants for cats on the internet, but they aren't available in many places, and are probably far to expensive, and also very stressful for the cat. As much as you come to care for a pet, I don't normally think the kind of extensive intervention that a ailing human would get is justified. Cats wouldn't understand what's happening with the stressful treatment and the cost is apparently thousands of dollars. So I'd have to agree with the vet, its not really a practical idea, esp. for an old cat with chronic rather than temporary kidney failure and an owner who isn't wealthy.
