My comments were directed at the incredible wastefulness of the average american, as opposed to severe lifestyle changes. I constantly see people throwing away money on energy, and the logic is often so stupid that they immediately show they are dumber than a rock.

As an example one lady I know had an average 350/month home heating bill last winter. Her attic is not insulated in her very old small home. I suggest she get 20 bags of cellulose insulation and blow it in. I mentioned the cost would be about $150, she could easily do it in an afternoon, and it should knock at least $100/month off of her heating bill, as well as helping keep the house cooler in the summer.

Her response? "I can't afford it". This very nice but incredibly stupid woman is unable to understand that spending $150 once will save her $500+ each and every year, AND she gets a tax credit for the insulation, AND she is saving after tax dollars.

As I have said before, there is often a very good reason why poor people are poor.

My BIL's excuse for leaving lights on? It uses less energy than turning them off because they consume a lot of power when they start. Duh, they do for about a half second. Breakeven is probably under 5 seconds. Another brain dead reason is that the light bulb will last longer. If you are replacing 20 light bulbs a month in your home there might be SOME bit of sense in that logic.
