I think we can separate "socialism" and "corporatism". IMO the U.S. suffers much more from the latter (and incompetence) than from the former. Plus - we have a huge problem right now with ideologues. There is a group of people that think any regulation is bad. I've seen some of these ideologues label every regulation as "socialism" in an attempt to discredit all government. Heck, I'm for minimal regulation. But IMO some regulation is necessary. Apparently that makes me a socialist these days!
