"Now, please explain, in light of these observed facts, what kind of "responsible and accountable" reaction you would recommend?

I presume you mean beyond what is already being done. I am, like most Americans, finding myself a little in the dark wrt the mind set of Iranian leadership. There is plenty of information about them but it is mostly forwarded by people who view the Iranian Leadership with disdain. Everyone should take that with a grain of salt. But if that's the only type of 'interaction' it is the only reality possible. Some of what we get from the speeches and comments published by the Iranian Leadership are responses from direct threats by us, so naturally it is hostile in nature, that is the climate in which it is fomented. When that is the only mode of communications, I don't see how it could ever lead to a good outcome.

What else could be recommended? I am looking not to see what we could do better or more forcefully to make our point because I think we've made it crystal clear. Doing more of that or trying harder only makes it seem like we believe we've bumbled up to now. I am looking to see if there are any gaps, or anything that hasn't been looked into at all.

What hasn't been done at all is engagement in open and involved discussion about mutually beneficial interests. I don't think Amedinejad or Bush would be genuine participants in such discussions but I think there should be some persons in positions of authority who could. Rice comes to mind as our rep and Sistani from the Iranian side as people who could have a decent exchange of ideas. I'm sure there must be others.

I recommend we try a new approach.
