Actually I believe the benefits of thicker gates is and was intended to be in leakage, especially at low usage states. AMD wanted to make a big play in the mobile space, where margins are higher, and figured the best processor for power management purposes had very low power consumption throttled down and minimal cooling requirements. Clockspeed and consumption under load were secondary considerations. This makes sense for the vast majority of users who virtually never stress their notebook processors, and want a bit a burst speed and long battery life. Seems to have worked out OK as AMD is gaining in that space. Core 2 Duo does much worse in this metric, and as some folks make fun of AMD claiming better power numbers doing nothing, it is a big deal in actual use. My wife as a Dell notebook with a Core 2 Duo and the battery life is really pathetic.
