I attempt an androgynous mannerism on SI so's to keep the focus more on topical substance than on the person (me) discussing a particular issue. When I share personal info (rarely) it is with people who've earned my trust and it is in PM. I slipped a bit today.

If people want to share their personal interests and have little camp fire chats on SI, that's cool but I see no good reason to make political topics personal. Some people can't help it due to strong personal preferences or prejudices. Although somewhat entertaining, the personal sniping you all engage in is a distraction with regards to meaningful discourse. A little bit goes a long way and occasionally adds some humor when we are getting overly serious about a topic ... however, a flood of flaming bashes day in and day out is down right insufferable. When it has obviously gotten carried away, it seems like a simple thing to just drop it for the option of civil discourse on any other given topic. I see posters doing that all the time.
