My husband is from some of the area where the Revolutionary War was fought, and visited with his family many of the famous sites when he was a youngster.....

We have many books about that War, and one of them that he enjoyed reading and that spoke about the Prison Ships was this one:

WARD, CHRISTOPHER. The War of the Revolution. Edited by John Richard Aldan. 2 vols. Pp. xiv, 476; vii, 477-989. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1952.

The prison ships must have just been h*llish places....they sound worse than Andersonville.

Also another link with many links, including the use of Ward's books ..
