If I understand what you have been writing correctly your biggest complaint about medical insurance is that state governments have screwed it up. You have personal experience that supports this. So why, given you experience with government messing up health insurance, would you be in favor of giving them a larger role?

"I don't see many concrete suggestions as to how the current private system can provide better coverage from your side..."

Sorry if I have not communicated clearly. My first suggestion would be to allow insurance consumers to buy policies from whatever company they desire. After insurance policies that comply with Massachusetts, New York, California and other intrusive states stop selling, insurers will respond with more choices. Credit cards used to be Balkanized too. Creating the ability to sell across state borders has unleashed a slew of new products and cost savings.

What would happen if each state required vastly different standards for food sold in their state. Texas did not allow over 1.5% salt, but Utah required only potassium salt, while Montana only allowed sodium salt and California only allowed sea salt? One of the reasons that America has been a successful economy is that we had a UCC. Even Europe is eliminating the barriers to commerce within their community.

After seeing prices fall on insurance as ridiculous state variances and mandates are reduced in significance we could see what changes needed to be made. I am for studying the effects of a major structural change instead of trying to implement twenty new things simultaneously and not knowing which were good and which were unnecessary.
