Finally got my torx driver set... sometimes it really is just a suspicious coincidence: the hard drive was dead. The blame and credit goes to Apple on this: they did such a good job of sound-dampening the drive that I could not hear the drive clicking. As soon as I hooked it up externally, it was clear that the drive was dead. My PowerBook now has a new drive and is running Leopard with the usual set of .0 issues rather than being bricked.
