Joke? Not at all. Sure the trade deficit has gotten worse over the years (even adjusting for inflation and economic growth which your chart doesn't do), but its gotten better recently. In any case the point is not the trade balance, but the fact of record exports, which strongly argues against the assertion that the US doesn't sell anything anyone wants to buy. We sell a massive amount of stuff to other countries. Of course we import even more than we export, but that doesn't mean you should just pretend the exports don't exist.

To put things another way, the US exports more than China or Japan.
