Nadine, I wrote:

"Liberty comes when a culture, a people and a nation demand it. It doesn't come when YOU missionary types think it's time they ought to have it.

And they have to do more than demand it; they have to want it badly enough so that a strong majority of them stand up to fight and die for it.

And, even after they achieve some semblance of liberty, it won't endure unless their culture has adopted mores that incorporate a deep and abiding respect for the rule of law, the rights of minorities living among them and institutions that check and balance the power of the most powerful among them.
"

You replied:

So, Germany and Japan are still dictatorships?"

Now what does that have to do with what I wrote?

Germany had elections long before Hitler came to power. It was once considered a wonderful nation full of ideas and accepting of Jews and other minorities. There was respect for the rule of law and institutions in place long before Hitler used his hate and fear rhetoric to stir up negative passions that led the Germans into a second world war. (You should know all about those negative passions.)

Japan was a nation with a long history of respect for traditions, rules and central leadership and, after the second world war, the Japanese emperor and the Japanese leadership endorsed and supported the move toward democratic reforms.

And both nations had learned a hard lesson and paid an unspeakably terrible toll for the actions of their previous leaders. I said, in my post that sometimes the strong dogs will take a culture places it shouldn't go and that's how cultures learn. That's a fact.

So, whatever you meant by your one-liner, I'm not impressed. Ed
