Either the Dems are really that bad, or we unable to view them objectively. Bit of both, probably. I think it's pretty objective to say that Hillary is able, Obama will be able at some point in the future but is not yet ready for prime time, and Edwards is a lightweight. Thompson is not too bad but is going nowhere as a candidate. But if you pictured a debate between any one of the Republican five and Obama or Edwards, the Republican would win handily. With Hillary it would be an even match.
