When I was younger (45 to 50 years ago), I thought we would make it as a world because everyone was acutely aware of the fallout (pun intended) from the use of nuclear weapons. The thought of life ending on our world made it into Hollywood and glamourization ("On the Beach" "Dr. Strangelove" "What have they done to the rain?" ) Plus about everyone alive had suffered thru (psychologically) or heard about the horrors of Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

Additionally, as school kids we were periodically taken down into the school's steam tunnels to practice air raid shelter drills. We had Krushchev pounding his shoe on the table at the United Nations yelling "We will bury you!" and making front page headlines.

Our leaders were acutely aware of the danger and everyone over the age of 8 was sensitized to its threat.

Now, alas, we seem to have lost the sensitivity to the threat of oblivion. We proceed with reckless disregard of the potential of these brush fire confrontations to coalesce into the real thing and unless we are able to capture that sensitivity once more I am a feared you, Koan, will be proved correct.
