The carriers only had open windows to use before (although some in eu used symbian) so this is a good alternative. It is actually the opposite....Symbian has the lions share of the market with Windows being more of a niche platform. The Google platform definitely has potential, but the details are so scarce that it is tough to tell how much of a commitment their partners will make to this effort. They all are developing for multiple platforms and the answers in the Q&A indicated that this isnt going to change. One of the key questions I have is how good is the user interface? That is really the biggest advantage that Apple has with the iPhone and if Google can help remove some of that advantage, it will go a long way in helping manufacturers like LG. Perhaps we will be able to judge this a bit better with the release of the SDK? The problem is, google needs to pitch this to carriers who created the pay per access fee model for mobile internet in the first place. Thats the issue. It is really going to be interesting to see the response of the carriers. They have failed miserably in getting their own apps and services deployed so perhaps they are getting more open to 3rd party efforts? Google's carrier lineup is certainly impressive and definitely beyond what Nokia has managed to cobble together for their efforts....but again, the level of commitment is going to make all of the difference.
