Not excusing Apple here, it might be a problem, but
one alarm that went off in my head is the way the problem was expressed:
Apple is being utterly irresponsible
uh - sure- has he brought it to Apple's attention?
Has anyone else?
Maybe it isn't a problem - read the following excerpts, hopefully I didn't put it out of context.

Retrodata has come across "many dozens" of failures.......

......But he warned that you would need to see several hundred or several thousand drives with this problem to know for sure whether there is a design flaw.

Retrodata's Clarke noted that he does not see such numbers of failures because his company is small, but the picture could be different when all the experiences of U.K. data-recovery firms with these hard drives are tallied up.

This would be like my repair guy at the gas station telling me that, say, my Toyota Rav4 needs to be recalled because he had 4 customers with that car with the same problem.

"No honest - I didn't drive the car off road ! really!"

But Clarke is being honest since he does state that his sampling is too small to make any conclusions. Its the article thats making it a big deal. Maybe it is. It just might be the case that there is a problem....but you would have to multiply the numbers of cases by a few orders of magnitude. Wait a bit to see if more flags are raised before publishing please.

Wish I could do that to my salary (mulitply by a few orders of magnitude, not raise red flags)
