Junior doctor shortage causes cancelled operations

HOSPITALS have cancelled operations because of the desperate shortage of junior doctors.

Junior doctors' training posts are vacant in more than half of London hospitals after failed government reforms.

And at least 130 doctors' jobs were still not filled only days before a mass changeover of staff.

Health bosses are also braced this week for the biggest influx of new trainees ever seen, raising fears that chaos will threaten patient care.

Hospitals are postponing operations and outpatient clinics. The London health authority said it had contingency plans in place.

A survey by the Daily Mail's sister paper The Evening Standard survey shows that 19 hospital trusts were still trying to recruit doctors at the end of last week.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust was short of up to 50 doctors while Barts and the London NHS trust was still recruiting 10 in heart surgery, paediatrics and neo-natal care.

Kingston Hospital trust was short of three paediatricians; the Royal Brompton and Harefield trust needed junior doctors who were trained in surgery, a spokesperson said. Trained locum doctors would be filling in in the interim.

Most hospitals hoped to fill posts by tomorrow, but some criminal records bureau checks will not be completed in time. Hundreds of overseas doctors in London are estimated to need checks.

The figures reveal the size of the staffing problems facing hospitals after botched reforms to medical training...
