Yes, we can, but let us not confuse some of the aspects of a fiat system with fractional reserve banking. Both are evils.

Gold IS money and has been for 5,000 years, despite episodic instances of regionally affected variances in it's valuation as compared to other things.

Yet it happens every day. You see it in the changing price of gold as reflected in US dollars (and other currencies, most all of which have no backing at all.) Perhaps the Euro is fairing well at least partially because it officially has some backing in gold.
