My favorites from a pure play perspective are: FSLR (First Solar) and SPWR (Sunpower)

First Solar makes the lowest cost per watt panel in the world currently. Their manufacturing cost is about $1.10 per watt. These panels are pretty much used by utilities.

Sunpower makes some of the highest efficiency silicon based panels. In excess of 22% efficiency.

Silicon based panels cost roughly two to three times as much.

With more silicon ingot production coming online those prices should drop.

In Europe I like Q-Cells of Germany and REC of Norway.

Sharp and Kyocera of Japan, but those are not pure plays.

I have stayed away from the Chinese market but if I was to buy one it would probably be STP.

Going forward PV faces a threat from solar thermal electricity after about 2010. I expect that area to revolutionize electric generation and as a result obsolete nuclear, coal, oil and natural gas electric generation IMHO. PV's will still have a position and continue to grow worldwide.

As long as oil continues to go up these PV manufactures and others will continue to rise.
