Ted,
Its not goofy; its hateful and mean spirited......not something you expect from a minister.
I think I can tolerate belief in one or two "conspiracy theories". Ministers probably need a larger budget, since they have to talk about thinks like faith healing, walking on water, seas parting and other assortment of miracles.
As far as being hateful and mean spirited - what exactly do you mean? Looking up what actually happened, I don't see the comments extraordinarily mean spirited.
Looking up what actually took place between Fallwell and Robertson, I found this as the first link on Google: truthorfiction.com
Comjelly's comment is actually inaccurate. It was not Pat Robertson, but Jerry Fallwell who was attacked about the statements about 9/11. Reading the transcript, I can see the angle from which they were talking about, and I don't see it as mean. Here is the money quote by Fallwell: "What we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact, God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."
So what he is talking about is not "retribution" (cj's word) by God, but God lifting his protective curtain of America - that America is not worthy of God's protection any more because of rampant sin being committed. (I hope I got that right).
I am certainly not blaming cj for getting it as wrong as he did, because I seem to recall hearing the same mischaracterization of what happened in media, and at the time, I didn't bother looking up what exactly happen either.
That's certainly another remainder not to take mainstream media at its word.
