MetaCreations sponsors digital movie festival...........

CARPINTERIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1997--Who will be
the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese?
With the launch of the 1998 Teen Digital Movie-Making
Competition, sponsors MetaCreations Corp. (NASDAQ:MCRE) and the
Santa Barbara International Film Festival aim to find out. This
year's competition is now under way, and the search is on for
teenagers who produce digital films on desktop computers.
Entrants will create one-minute science fiction, Western,
action/adventure or comedy genre movies using their imaginations,
video and audio clips supplied in the entry packet, recommended
creative software and desktop PCs.
New to the 1998 Teen Digital Movie-Making Competition is an
advisory board composed of members from the entertainment and
computer industries, including Milos Forman, director of "The People
vs. Larry Flynt" and "Amadeus," and Joshua Greer, chairman and chief
executive officer of Digital Planet. Additional advisory board
members will be announced soon.
Finalists from the contest will make their movie debut at the
Santa Barbara International Film Festival in March 1998. The
winners will be announced and prizes consisting of cash awards and
computer software and hardware will be presented at an awards
ceremony after the screening. Luminaries from the film industry
will be on hand to distribute prizes and give advice to the winning
student teams.
The Teen Digital Movie-Making Competition, founded by
MetaCreations in 1995, is designed to encourage teenagers enrolled
in school to learn the art of digital design and multimedia
production through the use of popular desktop software such as
MetaCreations' Infini-D, Ray Dream Studio, Painter, Studio Effects
and Final Effects; Adobe PhotoShop and Premiere; and other
software programs that facilitate the creation of digital moving
images on a computer.
"Continuing the education of students in the fields of computer
graphics, multimedia and communications is vital," said John
Wilczak, CEO of MetaCreations. "We recognize these students are the
future of filmmaking and visual storytelling, so it is important for
us as members of the visual computing industry to help develop and
encourage young talent through events like the Teen Digital
Movie-Making Competition."
The contest is open to teams of two junior or senior high school
students (between 13 and 19 years old) currently enrolled in school
and in good standing throughout the competition. Students must be
sponsored by a high school, college, university, boys or girls club,
teen advocacy group, or New Media Center to participate.
International students are encouraged to apply.
For entry information, sponsoring schools or organizations

Previous winners of the Teen Digital Movie-Making Competition
have gone on to participate in internships with NASA and
college-level graphics arts programs.
Past presenters include Doug Liman, director of Miramax Film's hit
movie "Swingers," and actor and producer Michael Douglas, who
attended the Santa Barbara International Film Festival screening and
talked with students about the use of computers in the movie and
entertainment business.
The second annual Teen Digital Movie-Making Competition (March
1997) was a huge success, with more than 100 entries received from
students all over the United States. Gift certificates, cash
technology grants, hardware and software prizes donated by sponsors
such as Adobe, Eastman Kodak, Fractal Design, Iomega, MetaTools and
