Coal in whatever form has lower energy density than oil. And while I don't know about the method of using powdered coal for propulsion, my guess is that the weight of the engines is higher per unit of power they generate than gas engines / turbines.

When it comes to flight weight obviously works against you, especially on long distance flights.
