One of the difficulties in NZ is the vandalistic attitude of so many people who break bottles. It used to be possible to live in bare feet in NZ. Nowadays, it's not really practicable because there is so much broken glass. France is much the same. That is even with vast numbers of plastic and aluminium containers. All drinks used to come in bottles decades ago and there was very little broken glass around. My feet are pathetic these days. I used to run 10 km barefoot on footpaths and roads without problems. Now I'd be blistered and feet spiked with bits of glass. Quality of life has declined in many ways. Mqurice
