True, but the French were prompted to enter the war by our triumph at Saratoga in September/October 1777.

Our victory at Saratoga was possible because the British were forced to split their command structure into two separate commands, after we captured Fort Ticonderoga and severed the British land link to Canada in 1775.

Fort Ticonderoga was captured on May 10, 1775, in an irregular op by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys.
