I hope your friend is right about his conclusion.

I spoke with an ODA CDR 2 weeks ago. He did Afghan tours very early, very recently and in-between. He plainly stated that the conventional forces have given back all the gains in Afghanistan. He was quite angry about the lack of knowledge on how to conduct COIN OPS properly that he saw at senior levels across the board outside SF.

One thing I know for sure. The Taliban are reconstituting themselves quicker that anyone thought possible. Some think they are at least as strong or stronger than when we started on them 6 years ago.

I should point out that the ability to renew itself is the inherent strength of a flat, level, and leaderless (or near leaderless) Starfish type org.
