Increasing security and stability in Iraq helps in such objectives as -

1 - Reducing total deaths.

2 - Reducing American casualties.

3 - Robbing Al Qaeda and other terrorists of a safe haven.

4 - Moving close to the time when we can greatly reduce the troop levels in Iraq.

For those more positive about the decision to invade in Iraq see #5, for those who think it was a horrible foolish mistake see #6

5 - A moderate start towards moving the Arab world towards democracy, at least a small degree of freedom, and more positive engagement with the rest of the world. Unfortunately even the most positive possible results in Iraq will only be a beginning here. Its much bigger than just Iraq, and even in Iraq the needs go far beyond removing Saddam or defeating Al Qaeda, or even generally providing security, but without those things you don't even get a start.

6 - If we improve the situation in Iraq it becomes much less of a mistake than if we just pull out now and everything falls apart.
