FWIW,
Uhde-ThyssenKrupp and ExxonMobil are still promoting Methanol-To-Gasoline (MTG) technology as an alternative to Fischer-Tropsch. Here's a presentation given Oct 17th in San Francisco on MTG that discusses the New Zealand plant that ran for 10 years from 1985.

I'd like to see an analysis of the economics of MTG. We know the technology works.
