I have been told that even early 1940s the German army's estimate of the size of the Russian army was about only 1/3 of actual.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Russian knew that Japan would not attack the Russian far East. This freed up multiple divisions to make the long trip West. The Germans were again totally surprised.

The USA was much better know, however, the degree of industrialization was probabaly not comprehended. In 1934, Germany had 1/2 million cars on the road, Britian had about 1 million, and the US had over 10 million.

So there wasn't just a 3 to 1 population advantage of the US over Germany, but about 2-3 times the industrial intensity.
