Iraq is in the middle of an ethno-sectarian struggle for power. That's a direct quote from General Petraeus. I have repeated it often, as well as saying that there is no guarantee that the sides aren't prepping for a real civil war, as opposed to the one that AQI tried to foment, though there are positive signs of negotiation going on.

You (and Sam too but esp. you) have this bad habit of construing any positive thing I say about Iraq as "happy talk" meaning war is over! peace is at hand! all problems are solved! no matter how many times I say that JAM is a big problem, Iran is a big problem, final allocation of oil money and power is unsolved, etc. etc.

Then having constructed the "happy talk" straw man you proceed to bash it.

Not a single thing in the msnbc.com report is evidence against the idea that the Sunni insurgency of 2003 - 2007 is over. They tried to ally with the Baathists and AQI to throw out the Americans and the Shia and take back the rule of Iraq. That effort has failed and they know it. So they have switched sides and are now fighting AQI with the Americans. They are now pouring into the government forces. Naturally the government which is almost totally Shia dominiated because the Sunni boycotted the elections is alarmed. Can a power sharing arrangement be brokered peacefully or will there be a civil war? TWT. But the Sunni insurgency of 2003 - 2007 is over.
