I figured. It's something I read about in Fanshen.

Americans are quite spoiled with modern household heating. When my Dad was young they heated the house with coal, and burned corn cobs in the kitchen range for cooking. With winter temps similar to north China, the house got damn cold at night.

Then Americans went to oil, natgas, electrictiy, and huge McMansions. Now the leverage of rising energy prices is really biting. Two of my neighbors are completing major home energy retrofits right now. Mine has been delayed, but I've got to do it next summer.
