"So they have switched sides and are now fighting AQI with the Americans. "

No they have allied with US and rid themselves of the al quaeda albatross around their neck to maximize what they get if a real peace comes to iraq. They are being rational now after somehow thinking they could take back iraq by force and with the help of al quaeda. Iraq will turn out to be more of a draw than either a win or a loss. Iran and the shiaa militias are the big winners for now and there either will be shiaa control or federal-confederal solution that all sides by into. Al quaeda could never have agreed to this so they are odd man out. Both ed and sam are too smart not to see the military progress, they just doubt that there can be peace as described above without a US departure. US needs to go over 12-16 months and then and only then will iraq play lets make a deal. And help from the UN, perhaps moslem peacekeepers and even euro help might be helpful to as we leave.
