The hope is to devalue the dollar, but in such a way that it does not collapse. Then, hopefully, the devaluation will lead to higher housing prices in dollars, which will then bail out both the homeowners and the banks. That said, the crisis today seems to be much more severe than any previous credit mess. Just some stuff percolating under the surface.
