Snopes doesn't have any customer service dialog of Bank of America, but it does verify that Bank of America is opening accounts and issuing credit without social security numbers. Probably like almost everybody else I have canceled credit cards in the past and my experience was that I had to provide the last four digits of my SS number. My suspicion though is that the requirement to provide SS authentication would be determined by whether or not you used an SS number in the beginning to open the account.
