I am officially allowed to say I have a Ph.D. (ABD). ABD stands for the Latin phrase “All But Dissertation”. I actually half-completed three dissertations, but that didn’t seem to be enough for them for some reason!

While that was eight years calendar time, I was certainly “distracted” for a great deal of it, including periods when I was teaching 3 undergraduate courses at once because we had a shortage of faculty members. For those years, a one term deferral on all graduate course work and papers was de rigeur, and most of us managed to get two term deferrals on demand.

Although my undergrad degrees were in Math and Sociology and my Master’s in Sociology, my doctoral studies were in the field of Communications Studies, with three specializations: Cultural and Media Studies, Cultural Policy, and Network Analysis. If I took three years and worked really hard – which I am not at all planning to do -- I could finish the doctorate as well as a half-completed Honours B.Sc. in Chemistry and Astronomy and an almost half-done B.Mus. I also at one point started to challenge an entire B.F.A. (Fine Arts) degree as when I sat in on my girlfriend’s History in Art classes I knew more than the profs, but the bureaucracy put up such a fuss even after I got initial permission I eventually gave up on that one.

Now I am majoring in Molybdenum, Nickel, Rare Earth Elements, and Coal Bed Methane.
