I'm a fan of consumption taxes, not income taxes. It's not difficult to rebate the tax to the poor. We do it here (I'm Canucky).. Yes buy a HumV and pay a BIG tax... I'm alright with that. Got a $1,000 electric bill? Let's make it $10,000.That could work too. Convince a lot more folks to be more energy self sufficient, even add to the grid.. I saw so many homes with solar hot water heating in China... puts us to shame..

The thing about gasoline taxes (and I really really doubt the mentality between US and Canada has any meaningful deviation on this is that even poor folks drive way too much.. It's cultural and it's gotta stop. Targeting with luxury taxes alone would not suffice... IMO..

mea culpa.. my kids have various lessons/team activities.. My daughter has 2 free nights and my son 3... the rest of the time a lot of ferrying goes on.. If I can afford the time and money for that I can likely pay more for gas.. (I'll get a hybrid though :O)
