We are all tied to our past - our DNA, what nutrition we received when we were young, the people who loved us or treated us violently leave impressions that comprise portions of our beings. For example, it is obvious you are still not free from this.

>A thug in the 4th form threatened to cane me if I didn't get in the top 10 in the class in history and geography. History was irrelevant bunk then and it still is. He taught me an important lesson = authoritarian thugs need to be killed! I hope he died a painful death. >

Probably 85 percent of your self is determined by your past and "you" don't determine much. You exercise some self control during waking and healthy hours. Most of the time your conscious self is just an echo of all thoughts, memories of past incidents, and verbalizations that have sneaked on you by reading or listening, or from your limited interactions with the world around you. Unfortunately, that is all we got and we have to make the best effort (or we can imagine that we are making the best effort)

People act as much by emotion as well as by rational thought.

Would it be possible that property rights were granted so that the collective (family/clan/state/country/kleptocrat) could take its share of debt/duty/tax/toll in what seems a fair way?
