Spansion moves into NAND flash memory

PENANG: Global flash memory manufacturer Spansion is targeting to strengthen its position in the mobile phone industry by moving into the NAND type flash memory market.

Spansion (Penang) Sdn Bhd managing director Chooi Chin Leong said the company, which operates one of its manufacturing sites in the state, had started making inroads in the production of NAND flash memory chips.

“Currently, 40% of mobile phones already use our flash memory products,” he told reporters after launching the company’s environmental, health and safety week here yesterday.

The company is currently the world’s largest producer of NOR type flash memory chips which are mainly used to store codes in computers, hand phones, routers and switches, automobiles and set-top boxes.

In his speech, he said flash memory could now be found in nearly every electronic device in the consumer electronic market.

“The move to start manufacturing NAND type chips will strengthen our hold on the mobile phone industry while at the same time cut down costs as well as provide flexibility to our customers,” he said.

The company’s market share on the NOR flash memory industry has also been on the increase over the last couple of years.
