Sam, your argument makes the Perfect the enemy of the Good - unless there is peace and freedom all over, it can't be an improvement over Saddam's police state, which ruled by terror and and was punctuated by insurrections put down with tens or hundreds of thousands killed.

Iraq will be a mess for some time to come, the nature of Iraqi Arab culture (which the passages you bolded merely display) makes it certain. That does not mean it won't be a big improvement over Saddam, and perceived as such by the Iraqis.
