The company is developing a system to allow prenatal screening for genetic abnormalities by isolating fetal red-blood cells from a blood sample of the mother. The system is designed to improve current prenatal-screening procedures, which take blood directly from the fetus and entail a risk of miscarriage or fetal damage, are costly, and have high false-positive and -negative rates. Applied Imaging has been awarded a patent on its fetal cell analysis technology, which could potentially be used in early cancer detection.
