Another thing I am going to try is buying halal meat to cook at home. Very similar to kosher, as I understand it, but we seem to have many more Muslims than observant Jews in the vicinity.
My favorite places for lunch are kebob places, especially Afghani. Afghans eat a lot of vegetables, pumpkin, spinach, okra, chickpeas, lentils, eggplant, served over basmati rice, and the meat (lamb or chicken) is always very tasty, although I get the veggie plate more often than not.
Halal chicken seems much firmer, and the lamb much juicier.
I just learned that the foreign born population in Fairfax County is 27%! There seems to be a kebob place, a Peruvian chicken place, a Chinese restaurant, and a Latino market on every block in the commercial districts here. And they are good places to buy healthy take-out. If only I could get away from the desk. |
