"The collective" seems to be a very real concept in many cultures. Apparently the most successful and productive members of the collective believe themselves to be morally obligated to subsidize the others in their collective, be it family, tribe, clan, etc. Good on you if you are on the receiving end, rather hard if you are on the giving end.
