An IT manager at another organization I work with told me yesterday that one of the great things on the horizon for VMWare is the OS-less kernel. Apparently VMWare is working on a set of APIs that would allow people to program virtual machines that did not require an additional layer of operating system. He also told me about thin clients that would enable people to run sessions on these VMs sort of like terminal services does now.

We all know what happened when Netscape made public their aspirations to remove Microsoft from the equation. I am told that AOL still uses Netscape, but have observed that they were distributing Internet Explorer to customers instead.

There have been a few other sacrificial companies that made their dreams of sending Microsoft to the recycle bin public. Of them, only Sun is still healthy. IMHO this was a battle won for them by their lawyers. A well written license agreement prevented Microsoft from Balkanizing the Java market.
