"What was Lincoln's vision for the South beyond ending slavery" He wanted to bring the southern states back into the Union as quickly as possible. And he wasn't punitive. The Radical Republicans wanted to be much harsher. After Lincoln was assassinated, the state governments were dissolved and put under military rule. That was when words like "scalawag and "carpet bagger" entered the vocabulary.
