"if a generation is considered 40 years,"

But, it isn't. A generation is generally considered to be about 20 years. And that maps pretty close to the cadence in which my ancestors started their families.

"I've discovered it's even an official New York State holiday (ceremonial only, whatever that means). I live in NY."

I was surprised to find that it had spread out of the local area. It's a big thing in Galveston, less so in other areas of Texas. But, about 10 years ago I started to bump into people in other parts of the country who celebrate it.

"The Solid South flipped in the 64 election....why?"

It wasn't quite that abrupt. There were cracks before then. Eisenhower's push for civil rights and the Democratic support of it started the drift.

The Voter's Right Act was the final straw. Now, true, it hadn't been passed by the time the election came up, but it was obvious it was going to happen.

"So what was it about Reconstruction that so disturbed Confederates..?"

Being put under martial law, having your state government dissolved and then reconstructed under single party control and populated with outsiders can influence your viewpoint. Then having your taxes jacked up so the money can be doled out to foreign companies who don't do the things that they are being paid to do didn't help matters much. Why do you think the Posse Comitatus Act was passed?

It wasn't until very recently that calling someone a "carpet bagger" or "scalawag" didn't result in the use of firearms...
