The loss of manufacturing jobs is mainly due to technological progress. The long-term growth of manufacturing jobs in the United States came to a halt in 1969, and the decline started in 1979. While between 1993 and 2006 the number of manufacturing jobs in this country has declined by about 2.7 million, the index of industrial production has risen by 62 percent, and the value of manufacturing output in constant prices has increased by 54 percent.

Not to turn this into a partisan debate, there was a small increase in manu. jobs under Clinton....meaning that nearly 3 million manu. jobs have been lost under Bush. And while the US can never be the manu. superpower that it once was, it doesn't have to be losing manu. jobs at the rate of 500k per year that have been lost under Bush.

I hope there will be a time when you wonder why so many statistical parameters have turned negative under Bush.

"23 million new jobs created – the most of any administration: The Clinton administration created more jobs than any administration in American history; 22.6 million, 92 percent of which were in the private sector.

Revived growth in manufacturing jobs: After losing 1.9 million manufacturing jobs under Presidents Reagan and Bush I, President Clinton oversaw manufacturing job growth of 303,000 from 1993-2000."
