A unified FTTC/VDSL/ADSL system that supports voice, video and internet data with FTTC for new growth and rehab, VDSL for full service overlay and ADSL for Internet and SOHO that also supports small and meduim business is the real target product that will win. It must be based on ATM, support all existing telephony services (i.e. POTS,Coin ISDN,UVG,DDS,PPhone, T1, HDSL etc..). It must offer both TR-303 and TR-008 Class 5 switch interfaces as well as both broadcast ATM and Interactive ATM UNI to an ATM network. It must offer ATM service multiplexing, comply with MPEGII over AAL5, DAVIC and DSM-CC for interactive services and must cost much less than $1000 per home passed. Most of the solutions discussed suffer from only offering one service or supporting one deployment scenario. The Telcos cannot afford to build and manage multiple networks and are looking for a unified, flexible and low cost product. It should have a migration path to fiber to the home which is the long term goal but allow the use of embedded copper for quickstart applications. What is needed is a very cost effective product that supports all services ( DS0/DS1 voice/ISDN, digital MPEG-II video and TCP/IP Internet data) and fits all deployment scenarios ( new build, rehab, highrise, overbuild and overlay). This product will look like a blend of Bellcore's FTTC (FITL),IDLC, SAM and a DSLAM in one unified package with TMN management and worldclass outside plant packaging.
