I see this one as sad but necessary, with the best public policy in conflict with political necessity. After the Veco scandals, most Republicans couldn't be seen as soft on the oil industry, for fear people would think they were on the take themselves. A few R's spoke up, like Harris, Ramras, and Samuels, but most of them couldn't afford to, and of course the D's were happy to stick it to the petroleum industry.

The good news, if you're on the industry side, is that there isn't really a quantum shift here; most Alaskans recognize that the petroleum industry is a key part of the economy here and that we can't afford to drive them away, and I'm sure Gov. Sarah sees that too. This is a temporary rap on the knuckles for the Veco mess, nothing more.
