NYTimes editorials are a reliable contrary indicator for foreign policy. Certainly true whenever the occupant of the White House has an R after his name, usually when he has a D as well. This editorial is just more DNC-ordered defeatism. The Dems are married to defeat in Iraq. If they can't have a military defeat, they'll claim a political one. If the political one evaporates too (signs on the ground say that there is much underreported bottom up progress), they'll say that that it's still a defeat because it cost too much. That's already starting.

Everything you suggest about working with the kurds and sunnis requires our continued presence as an honest broker between the parties.
