Don't give up on novels yet. You might see a really good one come out someday.

I think novels are a way to visualize things that actually happen, and add the human drama that is often missing from non-fiction.

Personally, I go through stages where I read exclusively non-fiction for a while, then fiction. Sometimes when I get interested in a topic, woodworking is my current hot read, I will subscribe to magazines in the field to learn all I can about it.
