Lithography steps don't process the entire wafer at once. Rather they expose a field about 20mmx30mm in size. All other things equal, it would take 2.25times as long to process a 300mm wafer than a 200mm wafer.

So, 300mm is, IMO, a significant plus for Cymer. Fabs will need more than twice as many of Cymer's lasers to keep up with the other tools. The 300mm fabs will probably cost more than $2B - with a good proportion going to lithography.

re:I think the transition to 300mm is one of the few negatives I see for Cymer. ... Also, you can get more than twice as many chips out of a 300mm wafer. With one stepper/laser, you are doubling your output. Not a positive for people selling lasers.
